Cam’s Corner
No. 3   September 2024

Happy Fall from Cam’s Corner!

Can you believe it is September already? Where has the summer gone? Personally, I’m looking forward to the cooler weather; my brain is churning with lots of wool ideas! Here’s what we are up to this month:

First, last month I wrote that we will be open on Tuesdays starting in September. Due to scheduling conflicts, (Christine’s job and my teaching at Hill Institute all day on Tuesdays), we will remain with our current schedule of Wednesday – Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm barring any unforeseen life events. As always, call before heading out.

Last month I wrote that we were thinking about being open later one night a week and asked for input. We didn’t hear from anyone so that idea is on hold for a future date.

Repairs and Finishing at Wool & Dye! Starting this month, Christine will be repairing rugs (both hooked and braided) and I will be finishing HOOKED rugs (whipped, braided, crocheted around or folded under with twill tape). All rugs must be sent to us or dropped off at the shop – we do not pick up or deliver. We cannot accurately judge the extent of the damage without having the rug in hand to see.  Upon receipt, we will evaluate your rug and give you our honest opinion as to whether or not we can repair it and a rough estimate of cost on when it will be done. Note that not all rugs can or should be repaired (such as rugs hooked with burlap) and if we feel that is the case, we will tell you. These rugs are best loved as they are.

We are preparing kits for the pinecone classes that were so popular last year. Check our website for dates and times and to sign up. It is amazing how time-consuming preparation of these kits is! Hours' worth of work! I’m looking forward to teaching this class again. For a limited time, we will have pre-order kits available for those too far away to attend class.

We are looking for teachers. If you have an idea for a fun class using wool (or roving), let us know. Stop in or mail the shop with your ideas and a sample of the project.

Appliquers, have you seen our Sweetheart Squares? These are Christine’s beautiful hand dyed wools made into 7” x 7” squares. We also have 6” x 6” squares of all the bolt wool so you can mix and match for your next project. As an appliquer, I don’t always want or need a big piece of fabric. These pieces are the perfect size!

In the future we are hoping to design our own applique kits. This is a much bigger undertaking than it seemed at first. The minutia involved is overwhelming but hopefully we will have one or two for the new year.

Needle felters, have you seen our collection of hand dyed roving? Such beautiful colors it is hard to choose which colors to pick. If you are a felter, you need to check these out. They almost make me want to take up felting, but I really don’t need another hobby!

Braiders, Wool & Dye make the best brass lacing needles. If you haven’t tried one, you should. You won’t go back to anything else.

Events:

We will be at Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield on the 28th and 29th of this month for the 27th Annual Country Fair. This is our first time vending at this fair. Come and see us!  https://hancockshakervillage.org/

Other interesting things to do:

We had a gentleman, Peter Bott, stop in who will be holding a reception in Shelburne for October 29 – November 25. He works with wool and glass and has fascinating things to see.  Visit
Shelburne Arts Cooperative for more information.

If you are interested in vintage sewing machines, I started a group that meets every 3rd Saturday of the month at Hill Institute in Florence from 2:30 – 4:30. This is a free event. If you have a vintage machine or are just interested in them, stop in. September’s meeting will be on the 21st. All are welcome.

Til next month,
cam
